Biology 2483A Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Paramecium, Coconut, Diatom
Document Summary
Resources: components of the environment (ie. food, water, light, space) that are required by species: when we talk about competition, look at things that organisms need. Fundamental niche: the full set of resources, plus other biotic and abiotic requirements of a species. Realized niche: the restricted set of resources a species is limited to, due to species interactions. Here we"re looking at 2 resources, but there can be several resources in the niche. Confined to tight space due to other organisms. They hunt differently look at resource partitioning. Phytoplankton float on surface, no competition: competition can be direct or indirect, vary in its intensity, and occur between similar or dissimilar species. In plants: individuals of one species grow on or shade other species reducing their access to light (ie. kudzu) Allelopathy: plants of one species release toxins that harm other.
