Unit 5: communities lesson 18: species diversity in communities (nov. 14th 2017) Species diversity differs among communities as a consequence of regional species pools, abiotic conditions and species interactions: Big cargo ships ships are unstable if they ride high, they add water after unloading to lower the ship to make it stable. Used to use sand, rocks, wood, moved to water. Competition among species could lead to competitive exclusion or competitive networks. Less overlap in resource use (increased specialization) leads to reduced competition and higher species richness: experimental evidence for resource partitioning: Some of the species feed at the top, one shares the middle with another, another eats the center and another eats the bottom. Eating the same insects on the same tree, just at different parts. They share the tree and split them up. Went to 13 different forests, looked for species diversity. Divided tree height into a diversity index. No relation between bird and tree diversity.
