Biology 2485B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Chinese Softshell Turtle, Aquatic Respiration, Glossary Of Ichthyology
Document Summary
Lectue 4 ion and water balance 2: turtles. Native to ne asia, widely introduced they are capable of living in lots of places. Brackish water contains some salts (b/w fw and sea water) Widely farmed endangered species found on our campus. Ureotelic produce urea as its nitrogenous waste end product. Assumed to be for aquatic respiration when submerged good at dealing with hypoxia and staying submerged for long periods of time. But when out of water, the turtles spend a lot of time with their heads in puddles. Assumption: have convoluted skin to increase sa to increase oxygen absorption while submerged. If turtle doesn"t stick head in puddle, urea accumulates in plasma. Are these turtles voiding nitrogenous wastes via their mouths? (the way we do through urine?) The back half of the turtle was covered to capture excretion cloaca = urine.
