Document Summary

Lecture 12 detection of mutations and genetic variations. Not all individuals within a species have identical genomes. Different types of variations in a particular genome that may not necessasily be a mutation. Polymorphic: locus with two or more alleles where each allele is present in more than 1% of the populations: different alleles/different variations at a particular locus for a gene. Individuals are healthy but variation just exists: there do not seem to be an immediate impact b/c these variations are present in different individuals that look healthy/fine. Alleles of a polymorphic locus are called genetic variations rather than wt or mutants. Advanced sequence technologies allows sequencing of complete genomes from individuals. Variation tells us how much flexibility there is in genomic sequences between individuals: track variation that exists in a population. Craig ventor, james watson: sequenced the first genome.
