Evolution = genetic change that takes place in a population over time. Main force: natural section brings out change in a quantitative way: arises through di erential reproduction of individuals w/ di erent genotypes, due to di erent genotypes some individuals reproduce more. And their o springs have their genes, so they also reproduce more cycle continues > population evolves. Arti cial selection humans select the reproduction of organisms with desirable traits. The extent a selected characteristic changes one generation > response to selection . Ex: an original population of cow produces 80l of milk on average. A population of selected cows produce 100l of milk > the response to selection is 20l of milk. Selection di erential = di erence b/w mean phenotype of selected parents and mean phenotype of original population. Ex: farmer selects only the top 2 milk producing cows as parent, vs. selecting top. 20 milk producing cows as parent leads to being more selective.
