Document Summary

Evolutionary arms races: interactions between two or more species: situations involving multiple species each. Representing an important component of the other"s environment. When two species interact: mutualism: both species benefit. Ants live on plant, get food and shelter, when other herbivores try to eat the plant, the ants swarm the herbivore and prevent the plant from being eaten. Ex. relationship between flowering plants and their pollinators. Bat gets nectar from plant, benefiting, and plant benefits because their gametes get moved around in the form of pollen. Domestication: when humans develop mutualistic relationships with other organisms. We can eat these, train to work for us, etc. Because of domestication, the population size of the: competition: both may incur costs domesticated species increases. Arises if there is a limiting resource that both species need to survive. Ex. common food source between two species. Each species suffers a reduction in population size/fitness because the other species is present.
