Mammals can occur b/w developing embryo and mom due to asymmetry in relatedness (must divide parental investment to all embryos) Is parent offspring conflict likely to be more intense in monogamous species (mate for life w/ single partner) or in a promiscuous species (both sexes have many mates): promiscuous species offspring are greedy. 1% of genes in mammals have only 1 allele expressed (either maternal or paternal), depending on locus/loci = imprinting (other allele is hidden- methyl group attached to it) We don"t get biparental expression of alleles. Most mammals are promiscuous: female"s future offspring will probably have a diff father. Mother: save some energy from future offspring. Offspring: extract as much alleles from mom. Conflict b/w father"s and mother"s genetic interests plays out during offspring development.
