Collectively, mutual defection is irrational; both players would be better off if they could trust each other: payoff matrix: chart of possible outcomes. 8 years: tragedy of the commons: social conflict over a shared resource (multi-person prisoner"s dilemma) Ex. multiple farmers each have a herd of cows, they all share a field. Every time one farmer adds a cow, he benefits (extra milk, meat, offspring) but the other farmers lose out (overgrazing of grass) Collectively, group does better if all cooperate. Role of human emotions in the evolution of reciprocal altruism: human emotions (trust, resentment, guilt, gratitude) as adaptations for score keeping.
