Document Summary

Bio 1001a - lecture 4 inheritance of sameness. Evolution only possible b/c of variation in genetic material within species. Genome = dna sequence: known since 40s that dna = genetic material. Dna stored in nucleus, chloroplasts, and mitochondria: dna in nucleus = nuclear dna/genome, dna in chloroplasts = chloroplast genome, dna in mitochondria = mitochondrial genome. Prokaryotes tend to have circular chromosomes (characteristic of early life: dna in organelles = circular, therefore, endosymbiosis theory. Organisms evolved, eukaryotes have linear dna n and c: 1 n = one copy of all of organism"s chromosomes: one set , gametes of humans are 1n, somatic cells are 2n, 1n = haploid, 2n = diploid, and so on. Could be 3c (before s phase) or 6c (after s phase) Purpose of actively cycling cell: growth, healing/repair, improve productivity large cells are not very functional, hard to get oxygen in.
