Hiv in 1983 was described as a form of aids. The 1st anti-hiv aid, treatment not prevention, came into the market. 35 million who have aids; half could not afford and the other half was not diagnosed. Virus does not belong on the tree of life because they are not living organisms as they do not reproduce and lack a metabolic system. Viruses can only reproduce in a host cell that they hijacked and are continuing to evolve. It has been hypothesized that viruses are actually the descendent of a cellular living ancestor. Harder to design safe anti-viral drugs than antibiotics. Through replication, dna rna, from transcription, which then get translated to protein. Retrovirus does not have their genetic information stored as dna. Hiv has an rna genome, in which they get their genetic information replicated by a host cell; they must go through an extra step: reverse transcription (no proofreading)
