Document Summary

Class 6: energy and enzymes: why do we need to eat, we need energy to power our cells, cells are islands of low entropy, cells are open systems. Energy and matter are allowed in and out. In humans, food is both energy and matter. For photosynthetic organisms, a photon is energy but not matter and nutrients are matter but not energy: cellular work is to make complex structures out of simpler structures. Protein synthesis is cellular work, taking amino acids and putting them together to make a protein. Takes 1 atp molecule per peptide bond- a large consumer of energy: entropy-energy spreading, molecules break down because the second law of thermodynamics said so. To maintain low entropy, you must use energy. Breakdown of molecules is inevitable but you are trying to reduce that by taking in energy to reduce the breakdown: making order out of disorder.
