Document Summary

Eukaryotic cells can do a lot of cooler stuff (ex: dna recomb, nucleus, endocytosis etc. ); although bacteria and archaea can also do cool stuff (ex: extremophiles, cool bio synthetic pathways) So much more atp out from oxidative phosphorylation (by aerobic organisms) Proton gradient that builds up is the proton motive force (pmf) Relationship between surface area and volume as cells get larger. If you"re aerobic, you need a membrane for oxidative phosphorylation. Membrane is the only place where we can put etc units. Volume of cell needs to be supported by the energy generated by oxidative phosphorylation (responsible by membrane) However, area increases by square, volume increases by cube. As things get bigger, the sa : volume ratio decreases, this is a problem. When a cell get bigger, it has a greater volume, which requires more energy support. But the sa doesn"t increase at the same rate.
