Biology 1002B Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Phagocytosis, Chitin, Starch
Document Summary
Unicellular organisms function independently and are capable of carrying out all activities necessary for its life. In more complex multicellular organisms, the activities of life are divided among varying numbers of specialized cells. However, individual cells of multicellular organisms are capable of surviving on their own if placed in a chemical medium that can sustain them. Bacteria and archaea are grouped into a single domain: the prokaryotes (an organism in which the dna is suspended in the cell interior without separation from other cellular components by a discrete membrane. This domain is no longer accurate since bacteria and archaea are not evolutionarily related. The two common types of microscopes are light microscopes, which use light to illuminate the specimen, and electron microscopes, which use electrons to illuminate the specimen. Magnification is the ratio of the object as viewed to its real size.
