Document Summary

Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object because it is in motion. Potential energy is stored energy, the energy an object has because of its position or chemical structure. The chemical energy present in a molecule has to do with the position of electrons within its atoms. An isolated system is one that does not exchange matter or energy with its surroundings. A closed system can exchange energy, but not matter, with its surroundings. An open system can exchange both energy and matter freely with its surroundings. First law of thermodynamics, second law of thermodynamics. The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can be transformed from one form into another or transferred from one place to another, but it cannot be created nor destroyed. The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of a system and the surroundings will increase energy will always become more spread out. The thermodynamic measure of energy dispersal is called entropy.
