Biology 1002B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Woodland Vole, Genome Size, Human Genome
Document Summary
Summary of lecture 5 genome structure and variation. A genome is all of the dna sequence in one copy of an organism"s chromosomes: a genome = one set of all of a organism"s chromosomes, genome refers to nuclear genome most frequently, but there are other types. The amount of dna in one genome is called c : size of genome = c; widely variable within taxonomic group, sometimes expressed as weight (picograms) or base pairs (megabases, broad range of genome sizes in various species. Human genome: around 3 billion base pairs, impression that humans have more dna is because we"re more complex. The c-value enigma; has nothing to do with complexity: ex. Salamanders have more dna than humans: range in genome size among organisms in same order is vast. One c-value is distributed over one set of chromosomes: karyotype picture of all chromosomes of a given organism. Pine vole diploid (2 copies of chromosomes)
