Document Summary
Class 16: characteristics that make drosophila an attractive model system. Simple, few genes *: main stages in drosophila embryonic development. Zygote (fertilization of egg) multinucleate blastoderm cellular blastoderm segmented embryo larva pupa adult fly: main role of maternal effect, segmentation and homeotic genes in drosophila development. Maternal effect- for axis formation , establishing which end is anterior/ posterior. Segmentation- to produce segments (broad, two per unit, polarity of each segment) Homeotic- control which structures develop where: structure/function of the homeobox in homeotic genes. Homeobox sequence in homeotic genes, after transcription, generates the homeodomain of the protein produced by homeotic genes. This domain is specific and binds to promoter region of a specific gene that it regulates, a specific structure that it controls: significance of evolutionary conservation of hox genes. Conservation and duplication of hox genes allows for the development of different structures at different body parts, which can increase the complexity of the organism.
