Document Summary

Reduced fitness because individuals (genotypes) fail to survive and reproduce. Reduced fitness in individuals due to competition and/or mate choice with individuals of their own species. Differences in reproductive success due to variation in mating success. No babies if you cant find someone to mate with. Need resources to nourish and produce these large gametes, and the fertilized zygote. Sex that has limited number of contributions to the next generation is choosier. Sex that invests more in parental care is typically the chooser. Must be selective to ensure quality of off-spring. Females choose mates based on displays and physical traits. Ex: peahens and peacocks, stalk-eyed fly (length of stock eyes), peacock spider: sexes interact, elaborate courtship displays/calls, ornamentation, males compete to gain a females attention. Individuals of one sex compete amongst themselves. Competition for mates of the opposite sex: ex: elk, stag beetles, Outperform competition: ex: bowerbird nests, spider dances, frog calls.
