Biology 1202B Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Metaphase, Neuron, Shotgun Sequencing
Document Summary
Genomics is the study of genes and their funcions. Main diference is that geneics is composiion of a single gene while genomics looks at the whole gene and their interrelaions. Cell is arrested at metaphase when chromosomes are the most intact. Stained with dye to produce a banding patern. Chromosomes spread onto a karyotype and organizing all individual chromosomes according to size 1-22 and then the 23rd sex chromosomes (1 pair) Banding patern of dye dye stains them in consistent fashion and stay in the same way. Compare karyotype to the known standard of paterning to see the large chromosome diference. Abnormal chromosome structure like duplicaion with an inverted banding patern. Gene maps having sequence and knowing where the geneic markers are. Shotgun sequencing give the machine all the genes and then analyze them. Reining sequencing techniques on smaller model organism genomes. Humans have much more genes but not compared to others.
