Early ancestor of this order was mycorrhizal, and all genera followed suit. Boletes are umbrella-shaped mushrooms, but instead of radiating gills on the underside, there is sponge hence sometimes called sponge mushrooms . Like the russulales, they have wild array of morphological characteristics (they can look like puffballs, can have gills, pores, or can just be crusts on rotting wood) Can have pores, gills, can be just crusts on rotting wood. More primitive members are decomposers; more advanced members are mycorrhizal. Most advanced members are mycorrhizal and have gills (so gills here are a derived feature) Suillus is attached to the mycorrhizae of the pine tree, so won"t find it where pine trees aren"t. Agaricales is the order that includes the classic mushrooms (agaricus: store-bought mushroom) Pleurotus is the oyster mushroom, commonly cultivated; grown on rotting wood and is a saprotroph.
