Sexual part of life cycle is only a few days of the life cycle; rest of the life cycle is in the asexual portion (upper part of figure) Mycelium sometimes is called vegetative or assimilative (meaning feeding) Keeps growing and feeding until it has enough food to produce a fb. When it encounters a diff mating type, it forms a dikaryon (this one is 2 hyphae bumping into each other) Form a young ascogonium again, and within fb there is the dikaryon, and the rest of the tissues of the fb are actually the maternal tissue of the mom strain. This life cycle emphasizes the asexual stage which causes the disease on apple leaves and other fruits. When the leaf falls on the ground in the fall, that"s when sex takes place; ascogonium is formed, Fb is formed, and in spring asci are going through meiosis producing ascospores.
