Rusts have caused major famines around the world historically, not much recently (like in the. 1920s there were major infestations of rusts in wheat, so fundamentals of rust pathology was discovered in the 30s in canada) Uredia produce urediospores, and telia produce teliospores (telios means perfect; which means having sex); telia go through meiosis to recreate haploid. We also brought their alternate hosts: barberry and buckthorn, setting up perfect situation for the plant pathogens so they"ve got alternate hosts to perform their entire life cycle. White pine blister rust: not a major fungus, but we"ve managed to bring the fungus over here from eurasia. On pine; normally rusts are named by the host on which teliospores are produced (e. g. stem rust of wheat (cid:0) (cid:0) Spermogonia and aecia on apple; telia on red cedar. Autoecious: having just 1 host, so first 4 fungi are heteroecious (host + alt host)
