Another group in the same kingdom: net slimes (labyrinthulomycota) Have a plasmodium, taking the form of a net. Unlike the previous slide, these are marine and not freshwater. Eelgrass went extinct b/c of the major die-off of net slimes, which caused the extinction of the limpet, and brant geese pop crashed; extinction caused by parasitism. Pythium are necrotrophic pathogens; kill their host and then eat them; causes damping off. In contrast, biotrophic pathogens: derive their food from living host; if plant dies, they die too. Downy mildew is white fuzz covering on leaves caused by peronospora (causes blue mould) (late blight also)
