Week 4 reading ageing: definitions, mechanisms and the magnitude of the problem. There are 2 fundamental parameters for ageing note: can only be studied in animals not ppl: the max lifespan, the expectation of life or avg lifespan. Ageing is the result of multiple causes (environmental extrinsic & genetic intrinsic) Bc falls in birthrate and infant mortality rate at start of 20th century bc improved living conditions, effective immunization programs and the increase role of women as a part of the workforce. Females life 6-7 years longer than males: male smoke and drink more and exposed to more occupational hazards. Definitions of ageing: according to biologists: a continuous process that starts at conception until death, chronological age passing of time from birth onwards. Adding life to years, not years to life. Quality of life is what matters living longer is bad if it means w/ chronic illness.
