Chemistry 3393A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, Amphotericin B
Document Summary
Rarely used for depression today b/c of the side effects. Things that normally can"t move across mmebranes b/c they"re hydrophillic. Sertonin gets pushed out into the synapse from vesicles. On the pre synaptic membrane there are are sertoning pumps (cid:131) (cid:131) This is an imp target b/c we want sertonin to be in a specific range amount in the synapse (cid:131) (cid:131) If the amount of serotning drops out of that range, we can get disorders like depression. By inhibiting the pump, we can keep more sertonin in the synapse allowing for it to accumulate over time. Better drugs will be more selective for the ss pump but not any other neruotrans pmp. Diff variations give us more selective inhibitors of the pump. Trial and error method of designing a drug. So when you use these drugs, you end up creating an overload of serotonin leading to side effects as well (cid:144)
