Civil and Environmental Engineering 2219A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Cubic Function
Document Summary
Today we"ll be looking at the final method of numerical integration. Recall that numerical integration is another way of finding the area under a curve which allows us to. Aside from applying the trapezoidal rule with linear segmentation, another way to obtain a more accurate estimate of an integral is to use higher order polynomials to connect the points. The simpson"s 3/8 rule is the same concept as using a simpson"s 1/3 rule (using a higher order polynomial to approximate an integral) except it uses a cubic function which intersects the function at 4 points. Simpson"s 3/8 rule is generally used in tandem with simpson"s 1/3 rule when the number of segments is odd. Use the simpson"s 3/8 rule in conjunction with the 1/3 rule to integrate the function with. Numerical integration can be used to solve unevenly spaced data.
