Archaic greece, archaic greek art & lyric poetry. Physical context: rugged mountains & few navigable rivers. Sea was the most popular method of transportation, trading, travel, etc: semi-arid (lack of rain), mild weather, mediterranean triad. The formation of the polis: polis = city-state. Had its own coinage, calendar, ways to become a citizen (independent) Most had less than 5 000 people, two went above 50 000. Athens (actual city) and polis of athens (people and community who had citizenship called themselves athenians) Men spent lots of time in city center (mobile people) Basileus/archons, the boule (council of elders), and the assembly. Basileus" was still a title but with a different meaning. See basileus and archon when you have a problem. Different types of archons have a share in running the polis. Boule advised that year"s rulers and advised people. Only certain people from certain bloodlines could be elected to be a ruler or be in the council.
