Homer is writing about the bronze age but is living at the end of the dark age: he was bound to get some things wrong. Archaic: greek for early: earliest times that people were have thought to behave in a way that resembles modern greek culture, this year was picked as it was the year the olympics started. At this time, the polis begins to form and defines their society. The population is increasing: hints that the society was stable and safe. Greece begins to colonize: not trying to expand the country, sending them out to charter new land, for the purpose of spreading their own culture (dominating/gaining power) Emporiums: marketplace (rare in the greek world) The mother polis was called metropolis (mater = mother: in the west through 750-650, in the east through 650-550. The greeks were not united as one entity.
