The word (cid:498)family(cid:499) is derived from latin familia. The word originally referred to the slaves in a household. A co resident group many (though not all) of whose members were kin or (the physical house) individuals related by marriage. Patrilateral kinship was more common than matrilateral in the oikos. Often a stem-family (nuclear family + grandparents) Evidence for extended families, incorporating unmarried women (aunts, sisters, nieces, cousins etc). When you get married as a women you go to your husbands house. The senior males was called the kyrios. Took charge of relations with the outside world. Held legal authority over something or someone. Women never severed ties with the natal home, and might move back if the marriage was dissolved. Therefore women lived their lives in two oikoi, men in one. Household can indicate non kin members (slaves, dependents, metics (household aliens), lodgers) Households (wealthy ones were likely large and by modern standards the living arrangements would be crowded.
