In the roman world, we are dealing with the influence of one city (vs. the greek world) ancient rome (vs. ancient greece): rome dominates the world and its culture dominates the ancient world in a striking way. Two main sources of evidence: (1) archaeology (2) later ancient historians. Livy"s (titus livius) wrote the ab urbe condita libri ( books on the foundation of the city"). This is a history of rome that goes from the imaged foundation of the city. The early history of the city of rome (foundation date is traditionally set as 753 bce). Modern romans still live in the city so it is very difficult to do archaeological excavations. Because of this, they must work around it. European language brought along with the indo-european people. This means that there was an indigenous population before the indo-europeans came. Indo-european speakers ( italic" group including latin) must have arrived from elsewhere.
