Document Summary

*relying on greek sources to talk about macedonians, north of greece, whom they thought as barbarians. Early macedon: chronically unstable the ruler never seems to be able to establish authority over his kingdom. King never has stable control over his kingdom: rich in resources has mountains that has lots of forests (timber) greeks relied on. The lowlands got nutrients from the mountains and rivers on them, so the soil was rich. Great land for a kingdom but resources never used. Macedonians never recognized each other as a whole kingdom and people broke away: complicated relationship to greek, language kind of like greek, greeks thought they were contempt. They admired greek plays, had symposia, had the same gods, but the greeks never respected the macedonian culture that way. Macedonian king was supreme, could do whatever he wants, he was above the law, opposite to greek kings. To survive, the king needed support from the peoples.
