Classical Studies 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Cimon, Delian League, Greco-Persian Wars
Document Summary
The conflict between the athenians and the spartans goes back to the persian wars. Internal problems pre-occupied sparta, while the athenian empire (delian league) grew. But he followed pericles great figure in athenian history - with a convert"s zeal. Shows he was independent: he caught the plague (430-427 bc), but recovered. His account of the plague is both highly detailed and puzzling from perspective of survivor which there were very few of. In 424 bc he failed as a general to save amphipolis from the spartans. He was exiled for this, and returned 20 years later (died shortly afterwards) Moves to outside and becomes observer to war rather than participant, gave him freedom to travel and talk to ppl about what had happened, not just athenians. An everlasting possession rather than a prize composition which is heard for the moment [i. e. , heard and then forgotten] (1. 22)
