Linked to the greeks to the eastern european region that came out of the. Brought to them some of the most recent cultural discoveries of the world (alphabet) Ionia (or asia minor) what the greeks called the coast they inhabited. 2 waves: west (750 650); east (650 550) Much growth and population, greeks encounter over population. Early archaic period we see 2 waves of colonization. Colonization is always in reaction to internal problems or some sort of civil disruption. It would be decided that certain people would go out and start a new colony. Look for suitable new land, mostly in southern italy and sicily, also. Northern africa, or head east primarily by the black sea. Once land was found, the people chosen from the community are told that they must leave and cannot come back on penalty of death. These colonies are ways of valving off those who are unwanted (conflict or overpopulation most common reasons)
