Origins of empire: roman warfare and imperialism 509-121 bc. 509 was the same year that there was a transformation in greece as well. Rome went to war with the surrounding cities in latium. They did not win but they did broker a deal. Named after the roman leader at the time. Rome gets half of the spoils taken in war. All cities have free trade, marriage and full immigration. People were conscripted and required to join: while in the army, people were paid. Allowed the roman army to fight for a greater part of the year since they were being paid. Professional army but not in the modern sense. They lived just to the south of the alps: northern italy. Painted themselves blue: little is known about them as they were not a literate people. Raiding was a key part in their society. They measured their greatness by the fear that they instilled in others.
