Antony and cleopatra of egypt are defeated at the battle of actium in 31 bce. Augustus caesar reigns as emperor from 27 bce 14 ce. Has strong links to roman history: legend. Everything comes back to the nation that led to rome or the empire that grew under roman rule. Roman legend has fewer supernatural elements than greek legend: greater sense of realism. Patriotic in support of the roman state. Lived through a civil war that ended with augustus" rule (27 bce and after)
