June 411, political killings begin  believed that theAthenian democracy was little more than an “organized mob”  shift from volunteer-based work to greater focus on professional trades (soldier, etc.) Aftermath of the Peloponnesian War  economic shift inAthens  severely disrupted by the war, usual trade activities could not go on  750-500bc, Greeks had colonized into all around the Mediterranean  originally, raw materials sent home to be processed and redistributed  then, colonial areas do their own processing  a shift from centralization to the periphery  venture capitalism happens in the colonies (e.g. banking)  baby boom after the Peloponnesian war  a huge increase in slavery, from all the wars  many physical jobs are now done by slaves  manual labour looked down upon by free citizens  growing pool of discontented men, become mercenaries and brigands  grew as a root from patriotism, but now from usury  shift to a more cosmopolitan view on the world  Aristotle: “Man is a creature that belongs in a polis” (also Demosthenes) Spartan Supremacy (404-371)  ill equipped, did not have much experience running a large state  spartans considered easily corruptible, wanted some reward for winning the war  Persians demanded that, in return for supporting them in the war, restore Ionia to Persians  ceded, and gave in to these demands  worried about the loss of manpower associated with war  but then decided to invade Ionia again,
