Then evolved into more complex rectilinear complexes with storage facilities and central courtyard. More complex suggests social stratification (not egalitarian where everyone is equal) Made of mudbrick (sun-dried mud, shaped into squares); they are hardy and robust, but would not last through a flood (rather ephemeral) Wattle and daub is made of timber upright made up twigs and branches; daub is mud layer on top of that layer. This way of building persisted for a long time. This is a tell (accumulation of soil layers from human habitation from one particular spot and creates layers of civilization) Dates to 8500 bc in its first creation, and abandoned in 6000 bc. It lies over earlier hunter-gatherer evidence on the site, which means the same people were settling in the same spot. In pre-pottery a period, from 8500-7300 bc; developments that were unexpected; this type of complexity is unexpected. Probably used for defending the city, keeping watch outside of the city wall.
