Document Summary

Acropolis is the religious centre, agora is marketplace and although it"s also a religious space it"s the economic/political centre. At the end of the archaic period, we see the emergence of demokratia: rule of the demos (people) Democracy: we think it"s all-inclusive and ultimate freedom but it"s not like this here women, slaves, and resident foreigners (metics) were excluded from political activities. Slaves that were part of the society were anyone that was subjugated to be a slave; women had no political rights; resident foreigners not born in athens means no rights in athens. 508/7 bc: kleistenes brought about these political reforms and formed political bodies to rule the city. They created bodies of political groups that would be in charge of diff things, called the boule, prytanis, ekklesia. We want to look at the buildings that are req"d to perform all these functions, in an archaeological standpoint.
