Leaving behind troy i. e. turning away from homeric poems. Homeric poems: characters staying and fighting until death. Aneas carrying his father (and self) troy and dedicating himself to a new cause. Conflict between personal passion and social duty. Cranes stand idle, she forgets her responsibilities. Dido is seduced by language: language is seductive. I recognize the vestiges of the old flame . Imagery of fire: wound of inward fire (volnus = wound) Aeneas and dido hide from rain in cave. Exit as married couple (all of a sudden) Marriage is only a marriage fully when it is consummated. Aeneas" responsibility to leave the city is stressed. Aeneas is stunned by this, he is out of his mind. He gave into love, and that"s not what you"re supposed to do. There is my love, there is my country , it has been delivered by the gods. And so he must either betray dido, or betray the gods.
