The overcoming narrative: focuses on the things that people with disabilities can"t or should not be able to do . If you and i climb a mountain, we"re going to do so in our own way. We may have different abilities or different obstacles to face. And those obstacles aren"t all the kind in our own bodies. Overcoming what? : being normal becomes the goal of overcoming. And are rewarded for separating themselves from other disabled people. This is the problem with overcoming narratives because it overshadows individuality and the lives of people with disabilities: people who complain are whiners put the onus on the individual to never be a downer and care.
