Geology the science that deals with the earth"s physical structure and substance, its history, and the processes that act on and within it. Physical geology examines the material"s composing earth to gain an understanding of the many processes that operate both on and beneath the surface. Historical geology examines the origin of earth and its development through time. Includes the chronological arrangement of physical and biological changes that occurred in the geologic past. Complex system of interconnected natural processes: geosphere (solid earth, hydrosphere (liquid earth, atmosphere (earth"s envelope of gas, biosphere (earths life and undecomposed organic matter) Energy and matter are freely exchanges among the subsystems. Energy is exchanged between the system (earth) and the surroundings (outer space) The first stars and galaxies condensed out of the matter produced by the big bang and continued to move away from the initial singularity (the point of explosion: still occurs today.
