Lecture 8  10/02/2013 Dirty Harry • Callahan guns down the bad guy and the state releases him because it wasn’t a proper search, not a  proper warrant  The film forces us to sympathize with a conservative position – you are never told that criminals are  • born criminal, the assumption is that criminality is forced on you by your low income, circumstances,  lack of education etc.  But this film gets rid of that complexity and says evil people are evil • Callahan wants to kill this man, and he shoots him and throws his badge into the river • Like Die Hard, they are both borderline vigilante characters – here too the inspector is constantly being  blocked by his superiors until he resides from police forces and kills the bad guy • Important ideological message from these films is conservatism in regard to crime – you must get rid of  crime, they are not like us  • Iron Man – Anti technology, but still celebrating capacity to create technology • Destroys the suits and says I am Iron Man  Hollywood will use the
