Lecture 11 10/16/2013 Dark knight ­ both vigilantism and manichaeism are openly referred too ­ self­reflexive  = when it explicitly confronts its traditions of being awareness of construction ­ order vs disorder batman stands for order Joker is disorder  ­ the joker has worked on an elaborate ploy in which two groups of people each of a detonator to blow up  the other group and he wants to demonstrate that in a position of such danger and risk people will always  seek their own advantage and ruthlessly destroy anyone else to survive, but the joker fails  ­ Ideological message about the common people • Emphasis shifts away from superhero  ­ The joker is articulating a sense of the manichaeism the fact that he’s pitting against batman and they  will always be against each other Unusual to find this self­reflexive quality • ­ Batman falls into the pattern of not very eloquent action heroes ­ Averageness and uniqueness is dramatized via his costume ­ An ongoing theme is Batman’s desire to give up being Batman, he wants to hand it over to Harvey Dent  • H
