She was often ill, contracted smallpox and fevers when young. Periods in her life where she was unable to function. Was wealthy, able to hire servants when she was ill. People thought she was supposed to represent puritan orthodoxy. The metaphor of a city on the hill. Meant to goat people into belief in something (in this case, puritan thought) Trump references that in his campaign slogan. America has lost its light and is trying to re-ignite it. Winthrop struggled to combine gospel and human law. Ministers and governors became close-tied and often involved the same people. They became powerful and this is how their laws became enforced. If human life is always corrupt then the state-level should not interfere with it.
