Be attentive to how the story is told. Make note of words repeated, repitition is a signal of anxiety. It seems the more bartleby refuses, the more the lawyer *convinces* himself that he needs him. He goes to great lengths to excuse bartleby from his strange actions. Bartleby presents something completely unknown to the lawyer; melancholic feelings and a special sadness. I feel as if the lawyer yearns to be a more emotional, or caring person, and keeping. Literature is a specialized form of written language, bracketed off from everyday language. It is to look more than once and still find new things. Interested in mourning and loss the way it speaks to desire. In the economy of desire; how desire works. As soon as we get what we want, the desire is gone. As soon as it"s gone, the desire is back. Desires are never your own; you are controlled by your desires.
