Magical realism: barthes the pleasure of the text pleasure/bliss. Allegorical: to speak of one thing in other terms. They treat the wondrous like garbage, as a means of exploitaion. The wondrous has simply lost its ability to be wondrous. Story about arriving at a decision to accept one type of meaning over another. Old man represents one kind of meaning. Spider woman represents another kind of meaning: barthes, there are two kinds of texts. Like setling into a nice warm bath: no interpreing, no anxiety. The text that imposes a state of loss, the text that discomforts, unsetles the readers historical, cultural, physiological assumpions, the consistency of his tastes, values, memories brings to a crisis his relaion with language.
