17 views1 pages

Document Summary

Magical realism: characters may not notice the magic, author may not mention it, but we will always notice it. It is about the reader, and how they respond to it. Reading a magical realist test is a pure *uncanny* experience, it is perfectly real and perfectly strange to us. Allegorical: to speak of one thing in other terms. They treat the wonderous like garbage, as a means of exploitation. The wonderous has simply lost its ability to be wonderous. The decision to arrive at one meaning instead of the other. The old man represents one kind of meaning, the spider woman represents another kind of meaning. What people generally prefer is the text of pleasure. Text of bliss does nothing that the text of pleasure does. The angel as a text: he refuses to disclose; to unveil and to reveal himself. Text of pleasure: poses no difficulty to you, you simply read through the plot and agree.
