English 1027 lecture 5 september 21st 2017. Not all things in this life of ours are reducible to scientific causes; they don"t follow the logic that we expect. They are controlled by things that we are unaware of. Style is the result of the choices an author makes, with respect not only to subject matter, but t its presentation: elements of diction, syntax, figurative language, literary allusion, paragraph construction, and organization. People read authors simply for the quality of the style. Sometimes there is no: formal/informal, denotative/connotative, abstract/concrete, distinctive style (the plain style essays!! In assessing an author"s style you can consider adjectives: Hills like white elephants: what the story lacks, no names, simply the american and the girl. The man uses his name for her, a sense of power. The pet name has a free spirit (dance), or could mean a secret (the jig is up) their relationship, what they look like.
