While bilbo longs for home, the adventure offers him freedom (something he increasingly discovers the value of throughout the story) He is also protective of bilbo and the dwarves: gandalf sees the potential in bilbo and encourages him. Like a parent, gandalf has to balance moments of protectiveness while physically distancing himself and letting bilbo (and the dwarves) make their own mistakes and learn from them. Most of bilbo"s accomplishments come after gandalf has guided him and left. This is typical of what we see in adventure novels growth and learning occur after separation from the parent.
