Instead, nesbit attempts to confine herself to plausible events that may happen within an ordinary london environment. There are both male and female characters, both indoor and outdoor environments, and instead of the individual hero, there is an entire family functioning as a group hero. Robber who turns out to be their father"s best friend. In some ways, the events of this novel are quite improbable; the children have an unusually low level of adult supervision, and in the end they attain a highly implausible degree of financial wealth. The realism of the novel lies not in its mimicry of real events but rather in the techniques nesbit uses to make the novel seem real.
