Document Summary

Lewis, the lion, the witch and the wardrobe. Lewis situates his fantasy world adjacent to our own it"s not a dream world, like the alice books, but rather a separate world, with its own laws. In this novel, the children play outdoors on sunny days, and rainy weather ushers in the adventure: the children explore the house and find narnia in the process. The first sign of narnia is the snow crunching under lucy"s feet the excitement of the outdoors has been brought into the home. Lewis is picking up on a variety of traditions of children"s literature in his creation of this fantasy world. The white witch, for instance, is a fairy-tale villain, reminiscent of hans christian anderson"s the snow queen, yet she also incorporates qualities of the medusa: she turns creatures to stone, but she uses her wand instead of her eyes.
